...especially in Nigeria... My thots on a day when over a million Nigerian youths sit for the JAMB Examination...written on April 7, 2013
I walked up to one of them & said, "Don't take that exam! In fact, Don't go to the university either." Instantly, I was seen as an enemy of progress - sent from her village to hinder her progress in life... But then, I had my reasons.
After spending 5/6years (or 9/10 in my own case - LASU) + money running to several hundreds of thousands (& in some cases, millions - private Universities), putting up with lecturers who won't give you grades unless you;
put your back down (in the case of ladies), or
put your cash down (for guys),
looking for 'x' that is forever lost & never found - in the case of those doing any course in the sciences;
Struggling to meet lecture & assignment deadlines, projects & several other largely irrelevant jargons; ...
Then coming out to join millions of fellow Nigerian youths who are roaming the streets looking for jobs which are never made available to tђe qualified except an #OgaAtTheTop is involved, & after several months of fruitless efforts of trying to get a job, dumps the certificate only to hit the streets & 'hustle' for a living, I look at these guys who are hurrying to their JAMB centres with so much excitement & gusto & just wonder, "if only they knew any better & just hit the streets rightaway" - cos in Naija, going to the university surely isn't worth the stress & cash".
